Abagail had awoken in the middle of the night and felt the warmth of her soldier behind her. She had offered for him to lie with her in the encircled trees, and this time when she woke, she knew he was there. She turned toward him and buried her face deep into his chest. She didn’t think that she had woken him, but perhaps instinctively he clung more tightly to her.

She raised her head and looked on his sleeping face. He was attractive, just as her first thoughts had conveyed to her. His dark hair and skin complemented each other. The cleft in his chin made him seem distinguished and wise.

She thought about his Gaelic accent and couldn’t help but remember the tale he had told her about how he had come to be a Roman. She envisioned him as a young child being ripped from his world and his family. She realized that his fate was probably not much different than her own. Rome was indeed a great city, but it made its greatness on the blood of all its victims. For that reason alone, Abagail refused to return to the city.

But what about this man? That he would give up so much to be with her had really stunned her. Could she truly trust him, even after the terrible crimes he had committed against her tribe?

She studied his sleeping face and knew what her answer was. She wanted to believe deep down that she was right about this. He had showed her nothing but kindness. He wanted her and was willing to give up everything to follow her. Maybe she could trust him. She certainly could not deny that she had fallen asleep thinking about his lips pressed against hers. His honesty over dinner and openness about his past had her steadily breaking down the walls around her heart. There had to be a reason why his touch had made her quiver more than once, and not simply out of fear.

Abagail reached her arm up and stroked the side of his face. He moaned slightly and his eyelids began to flutter open. She leaned her head back and gently kissed the nape of his neck. Another moan crept from deep within Decimus’s chest. It was a moan of intense pleasure, no doubt. One that seemed to burn deeply within in her own chest, vibrating its way down through her body and making her stomach flutter with excitement.

Decimus mumbled her name before sleepily leaning forward to kiss the top of her head.

She lifted her head higher to meet his lips and waited for him to respond, to no avail. She pressed her lips against his and marveled at the tingling sensation that followed. She pressed against him again, firmly kissing his lips, and started to separate hers. Swiftly, his body came to life.

Decimus eagerly accepted her gift and took more. He parted her mouth with an eagerness that had Abagail pulling away with a flicker of doubt. It was passion, and something that she had never known.
